Valton Charles 1851-1918 Charles Valton (born January 26 1851 in Pau and died in 1918) is a French animal sculptor.

Charles Valton was born in the Pyrenees in Pau, but grew up in Paris where he frequented the Jardin des Plantes.

He was the student of Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Frémiet, directors of this establishment and themselves animal sculptors

… to the Universal Expositions From 1868 to 1914, Valton produces more than 70 animal models and is appointed professor of sculpture at the Germain Pilon school in 1883.

 

Charles Valton was particularly interested in felines. Bronzes named Roaring Lion, Walking Lion,

Wounded Lioness are among his most famous works. This nineteenth-century movement presents animals with realistic anatomy in action.

He creates many small scale models of African and Indian wildlife, including lions, tigers, jaguars, camels and elephants
